Consulting engineer

Colby Johnson joined Energy Strategies in April 2023. He supports the firm in the technical aspects of renewable and transmission development, energy policy, markets, resource planning and transmission planning analysis.  He applies his technical skills and industry knowledge to enhance Energy Strategies’ modeling and analytical capabilities.

Colby performs production cost modeling for transmission planners and renewable developers.  He creates inputs for scenario modeling and interprets post-simulation results.  This includes exploring dispatch results, cost allocation, and congestion impacts. He has experience performing long-term transmission planning and market studies, with a focus on renewable integration and energy storage. 

Prior to joining Energy Strategies, Colby was a Staff Engineer at the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) where he led the development and enhancements of WECC’s Anchor Data Set, as well as the precursor model, the “TEPPC Common Case”.  Colby served as the lead engineer, modeler, and scenario developer for renewable energy integration studies. He was also the staff representative for various WECC and NERC Subcommittees.
